Preamp Amplifier

Preamp Amplifiers are still among the best!

The phase amplifier is a piece of stereo equipment that is used to regulate the signals to enhance the sound that is transmitted to the speakers and heard by the human ear. The Phase Linear 400 amplifier was in its day the most powerful amplifier on the market with 200 watts per channel and two amps a channel. These were a low noise phase amplifier and were manufactured from 1972 until 1978 when the owner Bob Carver sold the company to Pioneer and this company then added a high end cassette player to the Phase Linear line.

One of the Phase Linear amplifiers was the 700 series, this was the first of the high voltage amplifiers and then came the Phase Linear 400 amplifier, and this was marketed to the public in 1972 and then the Phase Linear 400 amplifier Series Two was marketed to the public in 1978. These both had the amplifier phase shift that allowed the reference signal to be phase shifted because of the reference circuit. The 1978 release of the Phase Linear amplifier was even more powerful with 210 watts per channel.

This low phase noise amplifier was a sought after item by people that were piecing together a high end quality home stereo system. The fact that it was the most powerful high voltage amplifier on the market was enough to bring in sales and make Pioneer take notice of the company. After they acquired the Phase Linear amplifiers from Carver, they kept it until the 1980’s when they sold this line to Reconton, this company was not in the home stereo market but in the car stereo market.

The Phase Linear 400 amplifiers were the first to feature twin output meters and the amplifier had a frequency response rating of 5-250k HZ. The inner workings had six transistors for the output and the amplifier was built to pre process the signals amplifying them for the demodulator. In the second generation there was a change in the design in the heatsinks, which took less surface area in the Phase amplifier.

These high voltage amplifiers made such an impression on people that piece their home stereo systems separately to get the highest quality that they can still be found as well as replacement parts that are able to be found to keep these 1970’s models working properly for today’s home stereo systems.

The owner of the Phase Linear amplifiers Bob Carver went on from manufacturing these amplifiers that are still in use today to create the Carver Corporation that also produced home stereo equipment.
