This low phase noise amplifier was a sought after item by people that were piecing together a high end quality home stereo system. The fact that it was the most powerful high voltage amplifier on the market was enough to bring in sales and make Pioneer take notice of the company. After they acquired the Phase Linear amplifiers from Carver, they kept it until the 1980’s when they sold this line to Reconton, this company was not in the home stereo market but in the car stereo market.
The Phase Linear 400 amplifiers were the first to feature twin output meters and the amplifier had a frequency response rating of 5-250k HZ. The inner workings had six transistors for the output and the amplifier was built to pre process the signals amplifying them for the demodulator. In the second generation there was a change in the design in the heatsinks, which took less surface area in the Phase amplifier.
These high voltage amplifiers made such an impression on people that piece their home stereo systems separately to get the highest quality that they can still be found as well as replacement parts that are able to be found to keep these 1970’s models working properly for today’s home stereo systems.
The owner of the Phase Linear amplifiers Bob Carver went on from manufacturing these amplifiers that are still in use today to create the Carver Corporation that also produced home stereo equipment.
